I would vote for the Traffic/Primastar/Vivaro. we 6 of these mainly the traffic, and much better than the VW Transporter/Vito/Hiace.... we do approx 40k per year in each and the oldest one on the fleet is a 54 due to go soon seem to get probelms after 150k miles, we have had vitos in the past and run a transporter on our fleet now, but the traffic etc.. is a much better work horse.

    GD

whats the transporter like on fuel/reliability?
  • Blimey - actually agree with Goldenspangles........

    Go for the Hiace!

I am swaying toward the hiace, i do like the Traffic/Primastar/Vivaro but like i say a bit too wide!

  • that should answer your question then.

go for a drive in both, i think the hiace ride height is a bit lower than the primastar.
i dont think there is much difference in width is there?

  • ok, thx for ur help.
  • DONT GO FOR A VITO!
they cost too much to buy, too much on fuel, too much for spares (which you will most definatly need) and merc dealers just arent interested in you or your van, even the commercial dealerships.
i had a vito, it was fast, very fast for a van,but in the time i had it every time one thing got fixed another thing broke, it was a constant cycle, and the other vitos in mour fleet are much the same.
ive got a new shape transit, its brilliant, good on fuel, very comfortable to drive and quite quick off the mark ( for a van anyway)
i have had a nissan primastar in the past and can recommend these aswell. have heard good reports about the toyotas too.

but for me it would be the transit any day of the week.
i can get 40 mpg out of the transit, easily getting 500 miles from a full tank.

    VITO for me
    i have the 115 Auto Dualiner 2008 model,fully spec,
best van by far i have had
comfort of a mpv with van on the back,
its great,a work horse mon to fri and a childrens taxi on the weekend!,roof dvd is a must for the young ones,
best test drive all the vans you like on a short list and make your own mind up!!!!

ps not a problem with mine some people think they are a sports car and frash them, treat it with respect and im sure it will look after your wallet.
    im getting around 32mpg
  • Hello,

I here that these two vans are the the two most reliable vans for thier size catorgory, but i cant find anywhere what one is better for fuel.

Can anyone help me or bring to my attention a good van that is both reliable and good on fuel!?!?

p.s must be the same size!

    VITO for me

the vito is a nice size fits 3 large adults in the back seats.slim on the outside with MPV looks!
does what i need it for 100%

I had a t5 transporter for 3 years did 160k in it and the only 2 times it let me down was a broken clip on the turbo pipe easy fix and a spline in the gear stick part cost £25
I had a vito for a while after the transporter and it wasn't a patch on it
The hiace are a bit old fashioned but very reliable short service intervals though.
I got put off buying a vivaro after hearing lots of horror stories about the gearboxes. If i was buying a new van and money was no object it would be the vw and it will do 40mpg unlike the vito

i tried to respect mine, but it was just such a bad van i couldnt for long. it made me angry every time i drove it,and was as comfortable as sitting on a bag of nails.
just wait til you need some help from your main dealer,or even just routine servicing, and when they treat you like something they just stood on then you might change you mind about it.
i think the driving position of the new shape vito is far too low.
