I want to get an external hard drive for my network but would like one that could have 2 disks and be mirrored?
Anyone use a NAS box with raid/mirror function for backup?
Anyone got any recommendations? dont want to spend too much!!

Old computer running freeNAS? Certainly the cheapest and most versatile.Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.0

The reason i was thinking of the raid box was because of power consumption and raid?
can free nas do software mirror?0 -
ebuyer do a 250x2 buffalo for £78, (notes say not fully compatible with Vista)0

yea i've seen that one, must be pretty old technology if its not compatible with vista?
would like one that could attach to network too?0 -
Sorry, missed the fact is wasn't a nas (ebuyer think it is) , but you could buy a nas to usb converter.
Probably best if you could describe what you want to use it for, required capacity, budget, and is raid essential - it's obviously going to bump up the price and size?0 -
basicaly i want to use it at home so i can share pics and video's with the mrs...
got a digital camera and video camera...want to back the photo's up but dont want to have the drive fail on me and loose the lot so wanted to have the disks mirrored or for it to automaticaly run scheduled backups from 1 disk to another in the same unit over night or something?0 -
If you are using it for backups, you'd have the original on the original HD as well presumably?
What capacity and budget?0 -
Dont want to spend more than 200 realy....what ever i can get for that0

Buffalo linkstation, £225
If you can forget about the raid aspect, you could do it for half the price with either 2 nas boxes or baredrive+enclosure, or usb drives with a nas to usb hub, you would just have to sync incremental changes manually from one drive to the other occasionally.
Or, even cheaper, share the master on the main pc/laptop, and use a usb drive and or DVD's for backup.0 -
This is the one my old company used to use, and it works great!
