    Er, no.

You get charged your call provider's call set-up/connection charge (8p in the case of BT), for the time it takes you to dial the target number, however long it takes to get through and reach the engaged tone (or how long you hang on letting the target number ring).

so the rates advertised on such sites do not include the one off conection fee from your telephone providor?

it isn't up to them to set or compile and publish details of your provider's charges - but you'll probably be able to find somewhere that they advise you to check

try http://www.vonage.co.uk/ the inlaws swear by it, also know someone who lives in mexico and uses this. UK number you can take anywhere

You can do that with any VoIP - take it anywhere.

Vonage is OK for people who want it idiot proof.

If you just want an incoming number and no monthly fees, though you can top up and make calls if you wish, you can use www.sipgate.co.uk though to get a local 01 or 02 number you must either sign up in the UK or go through a UK proxy server, or ask someone to set it up for you.

You can then just buy a £20 device and connect it to a broadband router, or buy a router with built in VoIP ports and then add on the details for Sipgate and away you go.

There are several other UK VoIP providers which offer similar services.

This way you don't need a computer to be switched on to make and receive calls. Plus you have a local 01 or 02 number (of your choice) so the caller simply calls at their regular rates (possibly inclusive if they have inclusive UK national and local calls).

Think it would be easier for your callers to sign up to Call 18185 and phone Spain via them at 1p/min +4p connection (as mentioned above only charged when the call is answered, unlike 0844, 0870 dial-throughs etc.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

^ as Bextech but use https://www.newnet.co.uk

I paid a one off fee £20 & get a 0800 number & pay 2p a minute incoming ;) that solves the problem for anyone not on BT with 0870/18185 access, granted you pay the bill but still 2p a minute for incoming from UK to Spain is nowt 0800 is free from every landline - your UK friends might call you more often since its free LOL
SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe ;)

Sign up for Skpye unlimited Europe at £3.39 / month and you get a SkpyeIn UK landline number that you can divert to any landline in Europe. Your grandma pays a local UK call to your SkypeIn number.

Local and National call rates ceased ages ago. You pay the same rate whatever 01/02 geographical number you ring.

Just to clarify on this point - a VoIP solution such as vonage would be reliant on your broadband connection, not your Grandma's - she would just dial a normal UK landline number. However, if you do go down this route I would recommend www.SIPGate.co.uk or Localphone (as linked above) as these are free for receiving calls on a UK landline number. The downside to this approach is that you would have to either receive the calls on your computer using special software, or buy a special telephone that plugs directly into the broadband. On the plus side, you would end up with two separate telephone lines.

Not necessarily, you can instead just forward calls at their rates to an ordinary phone, Localphone's being 0.6p a minute to Spain

Don't forget an ATA which connects to a router, this allows you to attach regular phones.

That seems a good idea too. If you don't want to actually use VoIP to receive the calls. Myself if I had a decent broadband connection, I'd use VoIP to receive the calls and just use one of the ones with no monthly fee and use it to receive calls, might also add in Vyke to make calls (2.1p per call to several destinations).
