do you have to pay for maps on garmin or tomtom?

Hi,

I am trying to get a sat nav traffic edition and was just about to plump for the tomtom ONE v3 or garmin nuvi 250Twhen i read about having to pay for map updates after 14 days or something. I wasn't aware there were running costs so soon into buying it.

For people who have tomtom or garmin nuvis do you have to pay for map updates and if so how soon after buying and how often.

Yes, map updates have to be purchased, you don't get a free atlas every year do you. Tomtom offer a 30 day from purchase free upgrade and I believe Garmin are now doing 2 months. I have previously used maps that are several years old and not had any problems.

ive hadmy tomtom for about 5 years now, never updated it, its been fine

the only thing that happens is roundabouts turn into junctions, you will cope

You won't have ot pay to update it immediately. When you buy it you should get a code so you can put the latest maps on for free. After that it's up to you whether you want to update it.

I have a nuvi 250 which is two years old and I've never updated it since the first free update. The updates are quite expensive so often it's better to just buy a new Sat Nav. Not so good environmentally mind you.

Friend of mine bought a TomTom with fre subscription for a year. Whewn he went to update for the last time after 11 months it set his TomTom back to the settings when he bought it!!

Mind you after he complained to TomTom they gave him another free year(I told him NOT to update after month ten this time)

Garmin have a 60 day NuMap Guarantee. This means you can always download the most up to date map. Also traffic camera updates are free for the first 30 days and chargeable thereafter.
