I was under the impression that if it was below a certain value (£2500 has been mentioned on this forum I think) that the OR isn't really bothered.

It used to be £2k but some people have kept their cars and they have been over that value. The important thing is the neccessity for the vehicle.
If it is for work, it has to be that there is no other cheaper and viable way to get to and from work, or other circumstances, that warrant a car invaluable.
For instance, I work shifts over a 7 day week, starting anytime from 8.30am until after midnight, 15 miles from home. Public transport is a No No and my car is worth about £1200. I fully expect to be allowed to keep it - No Car = No job.
Whitzend - the only point I would make is if you say that you need the car to take your husband to work, how can this be the case if it is off the road?
The OR may ask how he is managing without the lifts?
    just a thought.....

As I said further up this topic sometimes I have to be in at 5.30 am (normal start time is 7.00am) and also I sometimes go to depots in other counties for holiday cover. Where I work is not on a bus route. Hopefully this will be enough to exempt it.

Absolutely..... :D You could always play down the condition of the vehicle as well....

Well I've had it valued at £1500, as a private sale, by our salesman ( I work for a major German vehicle manufacture - screen name might give you a clue ;)) but Parkers say its worth about £3K for a 40K mileage car , mine is 101K miles so I'm proposing to put about £2750 or less. Its got 1 month MOT and 1 month tax left.

For prices closer to those in the Black Book and CAP that we use in the trade try this website:

Well your German mean machine is leagues away from my lowly Fiat Punto but I must admit that I have put off buying a new door handle and a couple of other bits so that I can honestly say it is in "fair" condition rather than good. It makes £500 worth of difference according to Parkers. I would be lost without it..... (very tempted to say her :o )

    Hi SA

I may work for them but my car is a 4 year old Ford Mondeo. I don't get paid enough for a German mean machine!

No Staff perks were I work. Even the managers company cars are being replaced with... wait for it.... Skodas. Did we laugh!

We've been told that there will be no pay rises for the next 12 to 24 months, no bonus payments and any overtime will be at standard rate. Either that or redundancy

We are very much the same - I work for Mr R Murdoch and we got a 1% rise last year, not looking good for this year, redundancies, and our working week moved to any 5 days over 7 - no overtime, and Sunday a normal working day....... groan .... better than being unemployed though.
I just wish someone could have warned me a year or two ago that the bubble would burst!
