How to claim for help with paying your rent if you are on a low income
How many rooms am I allowed?
You are allowed one bedroom for
? each adult couple;
? any other adult (aged 16 or over);
? any two children under 10;
? any two children of the same sex aged 10 to 15; and
? any other child.
You are entitled to the following living rooms.
? One to three people are allowed one living room.
? Four to six people are allowed two living rooms.
? Seven or more people are allowed three living rooms.
Household Bedrooms Living rooms Total rooms LHA
Family A – couple with one child 2 1 3 3-room LHA
Family B - couple with one girl aged 6 and one boy aged 8 2 2 4 4-room LHA
Family C - couple with one girl aged 6 and one boy aged 12 3 2 5 5-room LHA
so if my daughter as a son of 13 and another son of 5 years of age .how many rooms can she apply for LHA
at the moment she as a private accomadation and a private landlord and is claiming for 2 bedrooms
to me she can claim for 3 rooms is this correct please(she is getting (£75 per week under the old rules)
looking at this she can claim for 3 rooms of her local lha

I think this must mean one bedroom for two kids of same sex under 15 (the 10-15 is just odd), it would mean two boys 10 & 11 should have same room, but not when 11 and 12.... it's usually you 1 bed for two kids same sex or one bed for two kids regardless of sex under 10.0 -
This is really a question for the benefits board rather than housing (more people on LHA/HB there).
But, to me, it looks like it'd be three:
- one for her
- one as an "any other child"
- one as an "any other child"
So, 3 beds, one living room, which could mean a 2 bed house with 2 living rooms (one being used as a bedroom).
However, if she is on the old HB system there might be issues changing over to LHA. She might have to (for example) finish her claim and start a new claim. And, to move, she'd need a new deposit - and to find a landlord that was OK with benefits.
So it's not as straight forward as getting a bigger house.
(Also, don't forget, it'd need more heating and insurance, more painting/carpets, so if the current one was OK I'd prefer to stay put than move just to get some paper-based entitlement.0 -
I thought you got LHA according to the size of property you were entitled to, not the one that you took. So if you are entitled to 3 rooms you get that money and can live wherever you want. LHA will pay upto £15 more than the rent. So you could live in a cheap 3 bed or an expensive 2 bed.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. LHA entitlement is on bedrooms not rooms, see here:
You are entitled to one bedroom for:
• every adult couple (married or unmarried)
• any other adult aged 16 or over
• any two children of the same sex aged under 16
• any two children aged under 10
• any other child.
