How to get a shine on a dull marble matel

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has any idea how to shine up a marble mantel around a fire place? It is black marble and is the original fire place in my home which is victorian. However i was prior to the weekend thinking of ripping it out as its looking dull and tired,
But i was out and about on saturday and saw a lovley shiney black marble mantel in a shop and thought maybe my mantel could get that finish with a bit of hard work. Mine is really quite dull and has what i think is a mable pattern effect painted on and possibly lacquered as sometimes the pattern rubs off if it get wet from a cup being placed on it. After hopefully removing the paint effect i assume its just a plain black with no marble veins running through it. I just want to get it mirror shiney
Cheers.

Hi, just Googled it for you and am coming up with wildly varying answers:-
#1
Refinishing marble is simply a matter of abrading the surface with a power sanding machine, using progressively finer grits until the scratches in the marble are microscopic, causing the surface to become reflective.
#2
Clean and Polish Marble
1/3 liquid softener w/ 2/3 water - Clean and polish with a soft cloth. This is another tip from a book I reference frequently, Talking Dirty with the Queen of Clean by Linda Cobb. She includes additional tips for maintaining marble such as cleaning difficult spots, buffing scratches, and removing stains caused by grease, rust, tea, coffee, ink, etc.
#3
Hg Marble and Natural Stone Shine Finish 1 LitreHG marble shine finish provides a thin protective coating.
›This means that the pores are completely sealed.›Dirt does not stand a chance.›It also prevents damage caused by fruit juice for example.›The result is a deepening of the colour and a lovely shining finish One litre is enough for a surface area of 60 m²..£14.99
I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has used any of these (or other) methods as I have a pale grey marble mantelpiece which could be doing with some TLC.You'll make my day if I know I've been helpful to you in some small way,
so please press my :T thanks :Tbutton x

It might not be marble but marbleized slate - very popular in Victorian times.0
