Can a cat flap be fitted to Georgian wired glass?

Hi there,
We have just taken a can in from a rescue centre and would like some help and or advise on fitting a cat flap.

Is it possible to fit a cat flap into a glazed door which has 'Georgian wired glass' ? at least thats what I think its called, its not as fancy as it sounds its that rippled glass with the approx 1cm wire reinforcments.

If its possible to fit without cracking the glass what tools would be best to use.

Any help appreciated.

Yes you can , you will need to remove the glass and take it to a glazeier, but it can be done in situ.

This is not cheap. Last time I cut holes in GWPP (georgian wired polished plate), I charged £40. Cutting a hole in customers own glass is also done at the customers own risk. If the glass breaks, the glazier will not replace it for free.

This is easier. The answer is yes. Make sure the cat flap is a double glazing one that will take account of the thickness of the panel.

These panels can be cut easily with a jigsaw. Drill a hole first to get the jigsaw blade in, then cut the hole you need.

Drill holes @ all 4 corners.

    Thanks :T

It's the only thing that's put me off getting a cat as I didn't think it was possible :)

Thanks, there is no chance of removing the glass first would have to be done in situ.

If I was to attempt to fit a cat flap in this glass myself what would be the best method, tools etc to minimise risk of ruining the glass?

I've cut glass for approx 25 years. I would STRONGLY advise you not to try this yourself. The tool needed to do the job is specialised (a circle cutter). Because of the wires in the glass, it is a LOT more difficult and dangerous than cutting a hole in normal glass.

If you try to grind a hole into the glass. You will likely break it.

If you insist on having the hole. Get a glazier in to do it for you.

I've had a thought of how you could do this job using a cheaper method.

Take out the glass, and replace it with a piece of plywood (you can paint it the same colour as the door). This would be easy to cut (including the hole for the catflap).

Just be aware that it might invalidate your guarantee on the door if you have one. I'm currently getting quotes and just dealt with a company that wont even fit a door knocker as that's considered "introducing a weak point" on the product.

PS Go, on,get a cat. Mine came from a shelter a month ago and he's the best thing ever :D
