Say you have £5 emergency, use all that then put £20 on the card, £5 goes to the emergency as you are minus £5 in credit, and you are £15 in credit.

See what I mean. You dont get charged extra.

Its like an overdraft except with no interest.

eg - you have £100 o/d at the bank and use that, your account shows as -£100.00dr
you then get your wages of £800 paid in. your account now shows as £700.00cr as you have covered the o/d, but it is there to be used again.

    Hope that makes sense

Please do not shout at me.
Sorry, but this myth (let's be generous) keeps coming up and persuading people that it isn't is a Sisyphean task.
They always used to charge you more for it. Admittedly I have not used one for many many years. When I did have one the £5 emergency credit got used up alot quicker than £5 of credit.
This has never been true for any meter that I have worked with, in fact the opposite is more usually true as the meters don't charge a standing charge when in emergency credit (although you need to catch up when you next top up).
It is this 'catching up' that makes most people think you pay more for EC.

    Hi

Further to my post yesterday. When in Emergency Credit the daily standing charge and any debt on the meter are suspended. This will need paying later. The meter only collects for actual electricity used. This is to give you more time to top up.

Once you top up, the standing charge and debt not collected whilst in Emergency Credit are immediately taken. The amount of Emergency Credit is also taken back. All this can give the impression of paying more. In reality, you do not pay anymore for electricity used whilst in Emergency Credit.

Nicurro, the bills you refer to sound like statements. These are records of your payments and the meter readings used to calculate the electricity used. You are not being charged again.

Are you being asked for money by your supplier?

    Hi Malc ,
yes i am being asked for arrears on the account which i have complained to my supplier about.
They have twice now reduced the outstanding balance after saying that they made mistakes but i still have around £70 outstanding .

Would it be posible to email you the last statement to look at?

    Hi

I'd like to try and help without looking at your statements. Please don't disclose any personal account information as I work for E.ON and not npower.

It sounds to me like the only real way to sort this out fully is to speak to npower and ask them to give you a detailed breakdown of how they have arrived at the amount of arrears they are asking you to pay.

This will give you a more detailed and hopefully more accurate view as I am not an expert on npower prepayment statements.

Any general advice you need, I am here.
