2 content insurances on same address

Can you have 2 contents insurance on the same address under:

*Different names
*Covering different items

If so, can any one suggest a company/IFA that can help with this?

Cheers

You can arrange cover for each of the occupants I believe Harrison and Beaumont offer this. You may find Endsliegh offer cover as well especially if you are students.

These types of policies typically have fairly low limits for valuables etc and can work out expensive.

If you are both students your parents home contents insurance may extend to cover your contents there which normally costs nothing extra and generally offers better cover. It is normally subject to you "Normally residing at your parents home out of term time"

The other alternative is arrange a contents policy in joint names as this is normally cheaper than having the two seperate policies above and tends to offer wide cover. I know Norwich Union offer it under their "Home Plus" policy which is only through brokers. You would in effect have one policy covering the whole home covering both of your contents. Its easier if their is a claim as you do not have two insurers arguing over who is paying for some items you may jointly own. I know that should you or the other occupant move out you can delete their name and add the new persons name/names with Norwich Union providing they are acceptable to NU eg no criminal convictions etc.

    I hope this helps

Thanks for your reply. Above is a good idea although say you get burgled and only 1 person needs to claim as only his stuff was stolen and nothing else. Now bouth names on the joint policy will lose their 'no claims' instead of just the one claiming - What do you think?

You would both have a claim registered against you and your premium is likely to increase around 15% the next year. However if you have insured in joint names you should find all of your valid claim paid so you would receive a lot more than if you took out seperate policies as this normally causes problems
