Glen, I dont understand how your previous diet(Im presuming processed/convienience) could be cheaper than a healthy fresh diet.

It is the lean meat and fruit that is the killer. We used to fill up on lots of bread/pastry, but we don't do that now. Following the Slimming World plan.

For example for lunch I used to eat 2 rounds of tuna mayo sandwiches, approx £2 if that

Now I eat lean sausage, a full pack of lean bacon, 4 eggs, full tin of beans , mushrooms, cost about £4

Also I would feel full after the sandwiches till dinner, even after my big lunch I need to fill up on fruit too.

Lost a stone in a month, so it is working.

hi glen , i get all my meat from the butchers in makro this week i had a full lamb for £59 the legs were halved so there is 8 meals right away plus meals from the leftovers ,we had chump chops ,chops , diced lamb and rolled lamb belly .
i also had a 5 kilo piece of sirloin steak for £33 when we cut this into steaks we had 38 steaks from this and a 1/2 kilo of diced steak ,that works out at about 80p per piece ,htese are normally £2 a piece in the supermarket .

you can get a pice of stewing lamb there at £1 a piece although it is still on the bone there is tons of meat on it ,
i roasted one last week and did a lamb korma for 3 ,a lamb and veg stew for 3 and what was left of the stew i put in a pastry and made a pie from it wich then fed 4 so if you look at it that way we had ten meals out of it .
so getting 10 meals from a £1 piece of lamb so it with some work cheap meals can be done

Do you all get your 5 a day?

Cheap cuts of meat? No meat is cheap anymore! Even mince is expensive! Please give me an example of a "cheap" cut of meat.
We have a balanced and varied diet. Some days we eat meat or pork, some days poultry, some days fish and some days vegetable/pulse based meals. I don't really count the 5 day, but if I were then I think we'd get plenty from the following example:
    yoghurt and toast for brekkie
    banana snack
    beans on toast for lunch
HM blueberry muffin or similar snack
stew, with carrots and onions served with sweet potatoes and cauli/brocolli cheese.
Water and fruit juice as drinks.
Ask your butcher what is a cheap cut of meat on the day you buy as it can vary.

I can't really have that many carbs in my diet, it is the reason I am obese. I guess you are just very lucky you can eat like that and keep your weight down. Cheap carbs, like flour, bread etc fill you up and keep the price of food down.

There are not that many carbs in there tbh, and this is an example day, some days there will be no toast at all lol (and often we have wholemeal or granary bread etc). It is more expensive if you are eating only certain foods for diet reasons of course, and I do like my carbs as much as any other food group. Are you on a special diet just now ? As for keeping weight down I have just always been on the move, and a toddler keeps me busy (although I do have a dodgy back and am not as active as I want to be sometimes!), I am not under or over weight thankfully .
Just a final thought, if you are eating a lot of meat is there any way you can 'buy in bulk' from local butcher or wholesaler and get some sort of discount ?
Shame you don't live here as there are often things called breaskfast packs (sausage, bacon, black pudding, lorne sausage and suchlike) in the whoopsie section.
Anyway I think we are off topic now so better stop this discussion here :).

  • Glen, your new brekkie of bacon eggs etc seems very large. A whole pack of bacon? is that right? and full tins of beans? You could half that cost if you had smaller portions(obviously..sorry, daft comment I know).

Do you not eat any carbs? See that would make it more awkward as we eat a lot.

I agree with you that fruit is expensive. This time of year it always is and I dont buy as much as I do in the summer where it is rediculously cheap. Even apples are pricey.

You must find it even harder in that you are trying to change your diet for weight issues but you arent really supposed to have the carbs/starch which are low cost.

Are you exercising too? would you be able to have carbs with the right kind of exercise to burn them off again (Im presuming again..sorry)
    May £10 a day challenge
    £19.61/£310
    Ebay challenge...£12.61/£200

Yes that is right, six slices, but I only cook the lean bit. The whole point of Slimming World is that you never feel hungry. If I ate smaller portions I would be starving.

I have a few carbs (the beans), maybe once slice of bread a day or a potato. If I have too many I stall with weight loss.

I am 14 stone, biggest I have been in my life, and need to get down to a healthy weight.

Don't have much time for the gym! Have a walk once a week for a few hours, but apart from that, don't have time. I sit down all day in my job, 8-10 hours and drive for 2 hours a day. I am up at 6.30, home at 7ish and by the time I have my dinner I am usually ready for bed at 9ish.

im also on the slimming world diet and at first i found i was spending a bit more because i was panicking about what i was doing for meals,
but i find if you go for green days it works out alot cheaper, fill up on pasta, rice and potato. i find im alot happier on green than red because i feel fuller and ive spent less. but if you love meat its not so easy! ive lost 1/2 stone in 2 weeks so im happy
