Combi boiler problem

Hi - have also put this in the gas and electricity forum.

Have an old combi boiler that has been running ok. A while back it didn't come on in the morning but after I had shut it down and restarted it it worked fine.
Today again no heating on the timed programme. Shut it down, restarted it and left it on constant and was fine again. Went out for a bit so turned it off of constant, came home and put it back on again - nothing. Have attempted the manual restart again and still nothing.
The pressure is ok, the pilot light comes on and stays on, I can hear pumps and things whirring but the gas jets don't want to ignite.
Have called an engineer who will hopefully come this afternoon. Anyone have any ideas what the problem may be?
No reliance should be placed on the above.
