It can be either tbh, but most people recommend using distilled clear (white) vinegar.

  • Ok, I've made up my Fabric Softener today with a mixture of Bicrbonate of Soda, Vinegar and water.

I was going to make the laundry gloop until I read that from tomorrow Lidl are selling a massive 5.4kg box of it's W5 Formil washing powder for only £3.49!!!!!!! They sell a non bio, bio and a color variety. It says it will do 54 washes, I bet I could get at least 70 washes out of the box though by being frugal with the powder. This would cost about 5 pence a wash.

Is this a good bargain or should I ignore it and go ahead with making the gloop?

well, I'm getting some ... I've had my trip (accompanied by 6'2" DS2 to do the carrying :D) to Lidl planned since I saw their promotional leaflet last week. I wanted to make some of the value powder/good powder/washing soda mix mentioned elsewhere on these forums, but like some other posters am worried about fading since all value powders seem to have bleaching agents in them. most of my clothing is made of coloured natural fabrics, so I'll be trying out a mix of 2 parts Lidl colour powder to 1 part washing soda, which I reckon should work out about 60p per kilo. which can't be bad :)
  • Yes, I was worried about fading colours too. I may try mixing the colour soap powder with washing soda. Is it ok to use the crystals and where can I buy the largest bag?

A lot of fading can be avoided by washing the clothes inside out. If you dry them outside, don't turn them right way out till you bring them in.
