Costs- uPVC doorframe

Hello there,

We are currently making an insurance claim for flooding, and our insurers agreed to replace our wooden door as it no longer fits correctly and the joints are coming apart. Our builder (employed by the insurance company) said he would ask if we could have a uPVC door fitted as a replacement. Our insurers agreed, and we checked with them it would be ok. Our builder has now come back saying only the door is covered in the replacement, and that we would have to pay £300 for the frame. It was a bit of a shock to say the least, as we had checked there would be no additional costs.

Is this a reasonable price? I do not know whether this includes labour, but I suspect that would have been covered on the insurance side of fitting the door. I have asked for a written quote for what is included, but it feels like we are being duped-offered something and then finding out about hidden costs.

We have three options-have another wooden door with no additional cost, have the uPVC and pay extra for the frame or take a cash settlement.

Any advice?

  • for a basic door design (no fancy glass designs)in white fitted i would say you would be looking between £500 and 600 fitted .have you tried your insurance and asked what the builders for the wooden door replacement is

    Hi a6windows

I was hoping you would be on!!

I have contacted the insurers to find out how much has been put in the schedule for a wooden door and fitting, but as yet haven't received a reply.

By the sounds of it then, the builder has worked out the price for a whole uPVC door and frame fitted and then halved it. I spoke to the builder again who said we would have to contribute £300 and the insurers would be putting in £160.

I know overall it is a cheaper way of getting a uPVC door, but we didn't expect to have to cover anything for an insurance claim. I guess technically we are being upgraded from a wooden door?!? Still, I would have thought the labour costs for fitting a wooden door and frame would be greater than an easier to fit uPVC.
  • i would of thought that the insurance would be paying more than £160 fitted for hardwood door .we have fitted hundreds of doors on insurance were people have had wood originally at no cost to customer.speak to your insurance co

    Me again!!

We took photos of the frame and sent them to our insurers and they have agreed the frame needs replacing and that they will cover all the costs.

Since then, the builder has asked us for money for fitting a gas valve and extra work they have had to do to the kitchen units. We've just passed them on to the insurer!
