His vehicle insurance covers him for damage to other people or other peoples property caused by the vehicle. The garage door belongs to him and not someone else so he cannot claim under the third party liability section of his policy.

This is the dictionary definiation of "Third Party"

third party noun [C usually singular] LEGAL
a third person or organization less directly involved in a matter than the main people or organizations that are involved

He cannot sue himself for damage he caused to his own property while driving his vehicle that is also his own property.

His best bet is to claim off his home insurance, a company like Zurich should pay this out quickly and efficiently and it will cost him less in excesses and increased premiums.

Sorry but that's nonsense again you insist on treating the claim on the basis of third party liability. Explain fully comprehensive damage to his own vehicle using this scenario?

His comprehensive cover will cover damage to THE VEHICLE for Fire, Theft, Accidental Damage etc and will include cover for damage to third party persons or third party property.

HIs garage door is not part of his car so he cannot claim under the material damage part of the policy and he cannot claim under damage to third party property as he is not the third party

The claim for damage to the house will not be dealt with by the motor policy, as motor policy liability sections always exclude damage to property owned by (or in the custody or control of) the driver. The house belongs to the driver thus the damage to it is not covered by the motor policy.
