Automatic Internet Dial-up

I've got a broadband connection, nothing fancy, it's just one of these with a modem where when you want to connect, you have to click on the "connect" button after you've clicked on the IE icon. What I mean is that it's not always connected, only when I want to be, then I disconnect when I'm finished ( call me paranoid ! )
Anyhow, just recently, whenever I boot up the PC, the IE dialog box pops up asking me to connect to the internet. I'm pretty confident I've got no nasties lurking on my PC, and I'm assuming that this is one of the anti-virus or anti-spyware programs trying to connect itself to check for updates. Which is not problem, but how can I check exactly which program is trying to connect itself to the internet ?
It's not really causing me any problems, as I just close the dialog box and I'll connect later when I'm good and ready, but it's just bugging me a bit :-)
Oh, and the "anti-nasty" stuff I've got running is :
Avast
SuperAntiSpyware
Spybot
MalWareBytes
AdAware
Many thanks.

A good firewall such as Zone Alarm or Comodo should tell you.Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.0

Is IE set to never dial a connection?
It's probably avast
A router is better than a modem btw, it's always on, but so is the hardware firewall.0 -
Thanks folks, I'll take a look into that.0
