Hi ive had my fish tank since just b4 christmas i got given the tank fish stand and some food. They guy said to replace the fiter every month. slowly even htough i have replacing the filter the water has been getting cloudy n little green spots have come on the tank glass:( changing the filter hasnt worked. it seemsto be working properly as the filters are coming out dirty. Should i empty it and refill ? and how do i do that? or is there sumthing i can put in the water?
Thanks for any replies i will go down the petshop but afraid they will try n sell me loads of stuff i dont need.

is your tank facing a window? it's possible it's algae, your best / cheapest option would be to buy an algae eater like a pleco or some snails and let them have fun.
or move the tank away from the window0 -
No not near a window or even in a light spot?0

it does sound like algae though.
i've had a 48*15*22 running for a few months and the water in it is from my old 48*15*18 which was running for about a year with no issues,
i've never changed the filters either.... what size is your tank and what filter are you running in it? its possible your filter isn't powerful enough for the size of the tank0 -
changing the filter completely loses all the good bacteria etc that you need,
never heard of changing it every month?
i maybe wrong though,
but i use to advise when changing filter to use half old and half new.THANKS to everyone who posts competitions. you are all :A.0 -
I was never told to change my filter every month either and i've kept fish for ages now when I clean them out in the dirty water im throwing away i squeeze the sponge in the filter to clean it and then pop it back in.
Sounds like your getting algae what sort of tank have you got is it tropical or cold water (gold fish)
From pets at home I bought something called green algae away or something along them lines it was £3.99
I used it for a long time but now invested in a cold water Plectomus (sucker fish)
I also have one in my tropical tank at home and thats pretty clear of algae all the time now apart from the black stuff (the only eat certain types)
So when i clean them out i wash the black algae off
