bathroom worktop - to use as a shelf

Options
I've got a boxed area in the bathroom where the plumbing for WC and sink basic is hidden behind tiles, but need something on top like a piece of worktop. currently got a bit of windowsill on it but its not deep enough (been cut down too much).

b and q do a 2m length (i need 1.2) for £60 a glossy black quartz. i remember asking in bathstore and they did similar on next day order.

seems a lot for a shelf, anyone got any ideas? could just get another piece of window sill and paint it for £9 but might not look great.

Hmmm, not quite sure what you're after, but I would be tempted to get a chunk of hardwood cut to size, then give it several coats ( all over, especially the ends and sides ) of good quality varnish, or primer / undercoat / gloss, depending on your preference. This should give you a hardwearing waterproof surface, and gives you the option of choosing pretty much any colour you like. Either that, or put some tiles down - can be either the same as the existing bathroom tiles, or perhaps just plain white, or even mirrored. Depends exactly what effect you're trying to achieve, but any of these options should be quite cheap, and allow you to tailor the colour to your preference.

Wickes and other sheds sell a product called timberboard, also known as jointed soft wood board. It comes in a variety of sizes. It it not cheap, but you do not need a lot. It can be varnished( for pine finish) or painted as required.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

Ikea have the Pragel plain black or stone effect black worktop in various sizes very cheap - not at all recommended for use in a kitchen though IMHO (see one of my earlier posts on it if you like - can't do links!) but would be fine in a bathroom.

I asked on freecycle for mine and got a black glossy one offered within a couple of hours - you never know your luck! ;)

    Mortgage-free Glee!
B&Q do contiboard (melamine faced chipboard) of varying widths that are a lot cheaper than worktop lengths. I think I paid less than £20 for a large piece for a boxing in job I had in my utility room.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

If it needs to be impervious then UPVC soffit board usually solves a lot of problems in Bathrooms, I used to use it extensively for access panels under shower trays etc and it makes an ideal material to clad boxing plus it's relatively cheap.

You could do what i'm intending to do with my bathroom units. My intention is to use maybe blockboard and then tile the surface in large mosaics (plain white 5cm square sort), then finish off with wooden beading around the edge that i'll stain to match my vanity unit doors. It may mean regrouting occassionally if it gets grimey (i heard you like grout! :) ).

I did start a thread here on where to get small worktops for a vanity unit sometime last year - if you do a search you should find it. Most of the worktops available come in 3 metre lengths and a width designed for kitchen units which is wider than you'd need (if my memory of your bathroom pics is right!).

Thing is even if it's a reasonable price our vanity unit worktop needs to be about 500mm deep with a cut-out that will be binned to make the hole for a countertop-basin (sort that is supported on worksurface around the rim)...seems a waste when i can do the same surface in a few sheets of mosaics. Guess it depends how much mosaics plus adhesive will cost so i'll bear it in mind when i get to that stage. Still would be much simpler than faffing about with tiling with mosaics and nibbling them to fit around curved basin - so may be worth it in the end!
