How to build own slow cooker?

Would like to use a slow cooker to save money, particularly as I could run it overnight when we have cheap electricity. DH reckons they are easy to build yourself, as the heating element is little more than a light bulb. Any one any ideas/experiences?
TIA!

  • I would not personally build one myself as they are not too expensive to buy.
The benefits of a bought one are that it would be smaller, neater, safer (built to safety standards with over temperature cutout) and have a timer and/or temperature control.

this is a great site for info, on all sorts of green projects. inc solar cookers/heating etc.
    Get some gorm.
  • Thanks for replies. I live in France - they are expensive here and too heavy to bring back in a suitcase when flying back for a visit!!! I have tried a hay box type thing before, using a ice box and a pillow - put hot casserole in ice box, tuck the pillow round and it was nicely done a few hours later. I like the idea of using shredded paper better though.
I have started looking also at solar cookers, as we live in the south of France with a south facing balcony, so get lots of heat.
    Thanks!
