Appealing redundancy

Hi I'm looking a bit of advice
My brother was told on Friday that he was being made redundant, he has to go into work tomorrow to find out why he was selected, he has the choice to appeal the decision and i was wondering is it worth appealing it?

To be honest, you can't appeal the decision until you know how it has been reached.
If it has been done in a fair manner and your brother agrees with the assessment/judgement then there is not a lot you can appeal on.
If he feels that he has been unfairly singled out then appeal, not a lot to lose unless you have a really spiteful employer who you need good references from.0 -
He went to the meeting at his work, there was 9 of them that were being made redundant, they picked the 9 people because they use a points system and they picked the 9 people with the most points.
My brother was off for 2 months with a broken foot and he some points because of this, I think that this needs to be taken into consideration as he couldn't go to work with a broken foot.
They got 3 choices at the meeting
1 ~ Take the redundancy cheque there and then.
2 ~ Come to another meeting next week so the union could have more time to look at every ones points.
3 ~ Appeal it.
My brother choose to go to a meeting next week, do you think he will be able to appeal it, taking into consideration that he got points for being off sick with a broken foot?0 -
Whoa Whoa Whoa

If nine people were made redundant, there has to be a thirty day consultation period with the affected people. There is something highly irregular here.
That's not true, it's only if between 20 and 99 are being selected to be made redundant over a period of 90 days or less.
My employer recently did the same, the affected staff were notified they were at risk on Monday, and gone by Friday.0 -

If these additional points took him into the top nine then there maybe a case but I doubt this would lead them to change their decision especially if they have already decided that nine people must go.
He might be able to get them to pay a bit extra in his redundancy pay.0 -
when they give points it has to be done on a fair system, and any sickness should be looked at equally, we tend to use the Bradford Factor when considering sickness, as to compare your brother who had a broken foot and was off long term and someone who maybe had 10 Fridays off would be unfair, and he may have a case for being discriminated against0
