my fella has a private number plate (I know, sad, but you boys!!) anyway, my question is, if the car is written off etc, is the number plate his to put on the next vehicle or does it become the property of the insurance company?

thanks

You can retain it and either keep it on retention or put it on another car. The insurers will give you a note confirming that the vehicle is a total loss and that they have no interest in the plate. You can then present this to the DVLA to retain the plate.

Yes, sorry. I forgot to say that. My mum's car was written off last year, and the insurers were messing around for ages. One day she contacted them, and they told her the car had been sold for scrap and they'd informed the DVLA it was scrapped. She was furious! It turned out that fortunately, because they were so useless, they HADN'T sorted out the salvage, and she was able to get them to deal with the plate. But they didn't seem to have much of a clue as to what they were supposed to do. She took advice from the DVLA. She would have been very cross - she's had the plate for around 30 years.
  • Tell the insurer you/him want to retain or tranfer the plate and that they need to keep hold of the salvage until this has been done. The insurer should then send you a letter of no interest in the plate. Once you have this you can then apply to transfer or retain the plate.

To transfer it directly onto another car you will need the letter from insurer, logbooks for both cars, MOT for both cars, form V317 and fee of £80. The vehicle's both needs to be taxed too (so don't refund it yet!).

To retain it you need letter from insurer, form V317 (the form is same for both applications), logbook, MOT, fee of £105 and vehicle needs to be taxed.

Form can be downloaded from www.direct.gov.uk/motoring

Submit to local DVLA office, should be improved within 10 working days unless office wants to inspect salvage or see engineers report (they will liaise with insurer if so). Then you will get replacement plate issued to vehicle so it can then be officially written off, and replacement tax disc which you can then refund using form V14.

The new logbook will follow up to 4weeks later (along with Retention certificate if you do retention)

As others have said... unless it's stolen and not recovered. Then I understand DVLA keep hold of it for 12 months, and then return it
