Hearth pad for wood burning stove

We have bought a wood burning stove for a new living room we are building. There is no fireplace for it to sit in so we need some kind of hearth for it to stand on as it will be surrounded by carpet. I have been searching online for something big enough and cannot find any supplier, even all the stove websites do not seem to supply the hearths that are featured in their catalogues. An alternative is to build our own. Has anyone done this, and was it easy to find suitable tiles? I want it to be quite modern so want to avoid using brick or quarry tiles. Thanks.

We did one with a concrete base and slate tiles covering it. It worked, can't say much else about it!

  • What about a piece of granite, bedded on mortar?

We have a thick slate as a hearth the builder fitted it when we had it installed

Ours is also tiled. I'll see if I can get a pic. I'd have thought most floor tiles would be suitable.

You could make a wooden base/surround and simply tile on top, by making it to the size of your tiles and allowing for any grouting joints you don't even need to cut any tiles.

Thanks for your replies and ideas. I'm not sure we could use any old tiles, think they might need to be heat resistant or fired at a very high temperature or something.

we've used granite tiles (couldn't afford a granite slab!) on a concrete base - it was just made by making a wooden frame and pouring in the concrete, tiling on top and then my OH made a fender from stainless steel (together with a stainless steel insert for the chimney space). we've got a large multi-fuel burner, one with a boiler so it does get as hot as they come.

Have you checked the building regs? There are specifications you must adhere to.

Yes, got information on what size it needs to be in relation to the stove and what we need to do to the wall at the back. Also know that we can't use a solid slab of stone as it may crack. (Shame as we have a large piece of slate in garden.) Was expecting hearths to be manufactured though, but i can't find any. Just exploring all our options though and finding out what others have done. I like the idea of granite tiles. Just been looking at some online though you have to order a minimum number.

got ours from wickes, used 10 x 12" tiles altogether. It does look really nice and is easy to keep shiny
