Student Tax Back Week Can Put Thousands into Young People’s Pockets
Savings
February 10, 2009 - Press Dispensary - Cash-strapped students could retrieve thousands of pounds they don’t realise is theirs to pocket, thanks to Student Tax Back week starting on 23 February, 2009. With the average reclaim being almost £1,000 per student, as calculated by the specialist team at Student Tax Services, many undergraduates and recent graduates are already showing a keen interest.
On 23, 24 and 25 February, 2009, a student tax awareness clinic will take place at Coffee Republic, North Finchley, London. Professional tax advisors will be on hand every day between 3pm-6pm to counsel students and give individual financial diagnoses. Students can obtain free of charge, no-jargon assessments that equip them to reclaim any tax overpayments made to the treasury.
Unies Mirza, chartered certified accountant and tax specialist who helped develop Student Tax Services, points out that students could retrieve hundreds, and possibly even thousands of pounds, which they may not realise are missing.
He says: “Quite often, students are shocked to learn how much tax they have inadvertently overpaid to the treasury. As many of us, including students, don’t understand the UK’s tax procedures and undergraduates may have erratic work patterns, it is all too easy for this vulnerable section of the workforce to make payments they don’t owe in the first place.”
He adds: “The aim of the event at Coffee Republic is to help students decipher the ‘enigma’ of tax on a first come, first serve basis. As proved by the fact that my team has spent more time obtaining tax refunds for students than for seasoned tax payers, it’s invaluable to have a helping hand to guide you through the cumbersome tax processes.”
The Student Tax Services project was borne after its founders recognised the impracticality of the current tax system. Although all the information needed for students to claim overpaid taxes is ‘openly available’, it isn’t in one place or easy to ‘decode’. Student Tax Services does the ‘leg work’ so its clients don’t have the headache of dealing with the user-unfriendly system themselves, and can get on with their studies and their lives.
Mr Mirza explains: “Those who have used the government’s websites to try to reclaim their tax have described them to us as ‘perplexing’ and an ‘awful waste of time’. By taking into account individual situations, Student Tax Services removes the mystique from the tax system and gives students the confidence to take control of their own financial affairs.”
Coffee Republic will be offering students a 10% discount on all hot drinks alongside a daily prize draw during the event, so there really is no excuse for students to let their tax slip away!0
