"cardholder not enrolled" - MasterCard SecureCode - ?!

I use a Maestro debit card to shop online. For a quite a while now I often get asked to sign in using a MasterCard SecureCode when making purchases online. I set up my code ages ago and have been using it successfully when needed... until the past few days. Now whenever I try to use it I just get "cardholder not enrolled". It doesn't even give me the usual option of 'forgotten code/I don't have a code' or whatever it says.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem? I have no idea how to fix it!

Which bank is it? HSBC? You should go online (if you have access to internet banking) and find the Mastercard Securecode.

You need this password to register online at mastercard secure code.

Basically this is an extra line of protection for you as a card holder (to prevent fraud) and when you use the internet to buy goods, some will request you to put down your password that you used when registering at mastercard securecode.

PM me if you need further help or advice.

If you can't find the mastercard secure code from internet banking or you don't have access to your account, then you need to either call your bank or go into the branch and get the password in order for you to register at mastercard securecode website.

Trust you have now registered mastercard SecureCode set up with your HSBC card? Don't forget your password you put in when you registered otherwise you have to start again.

Its designed to protect you from someone using your card fraudulently when buying goods over the internet because they don't know your securecode password!
  • Some posters seem astonishly naive; have you ever actually used SecureCode? When you get the popup (or iframe whatever) and you don't know the code you click the link, answer the questions, DOB,phone, etc (Oh how those details must really deter fraudsters) then you have a new code. Of course this "extra level of security" does allow the bank plausible deniabilty as "the purchaser knew the code".

This is written from a UK perspective, maybe US systems are different.

It's just taken me 30 minutes for A&L to help me reset the *expletive deleted* password

I attempted to buy something in the internet at lunchtime - it popped up with the securecode window, I put my (probable) details in, whereupon it did precisely nothing.

10 minutes later (after a cup of tea) it was still there, so I cancelled the window and started again. This time I didn't get as far as the securecode window as the website gave a message of "duplicate purchase".

At that point I gave up and decided to wait until later

So later, tried again - on a different computer & different browser. Put the purchase through - no securecode window, just "unauthorised transaction". Think - pop up blocker is turned on, so I turned it off and tried again - no securecode window, just "unauthorised transaction".

So try a different browser, guess what - same results.

So check my CC, no sign of the purchase

So I ring A&L - get through after only 5 minutes, then spend the next 5 minutes answering questions about my sister's favourite teddy, statement balance & my mother's shoe size - also required to produce a password which, as I hadn't actually phoned them since time immemorial, I didn't know. More questions.

Then spend 15 minutes explaining what isn't happening, with frequent pauses as the call centre person checks with others.

Finally get a supervisor - who gets my name wrong - and explain once again. At which point she goes "ah, you haven't reregistered". What reregister says I, "the one you do every 60 days" says she. What's that I ask. "well you've got to change your password every 60 days" she says. OK say I (as I haven't used securecode since the time I was forced to register with it), what do I do.

"Well, you go to this website that isn't accessible from either your card servicing, bank or merchant and you reregister".

So I go there - there isn't an option to reregister, however there are options to register for the first time and for existing members. Being clever I chose the latter and went into the website. I try my signon and it doesn't work. Still on the phone with supervisor who tells me my signon (which isn't one that I would have chosen in a month of Sundays) and go into the site.

Look at my current transactions - guess what the purchase I made at lunchtime HAD GONE THROUGH SUCCESSFULLY despite me providing the wrong securecode information - note I haven't received any confirmation of the purchase from anyone.

So that took 30 minutes this evening and the 20 minutes from lunchtime and I still don't know if I've successfully bought anything.

Gues what, in the future if presented with securecode I WON'T buy from that company
