18185 and 1571

Hi, just a small question, I had a search for the answer but didn't come across an answer!

I'm a fairly new 18185 user and wondered what the call charge was if you phone someone who was with BT and unavailable and they had the 1571 answer phone service enabled.

I read not to use the service as it costs your friends money, so does is still cost me 5p or is more added (for a 01 number)?

Thanks, Speedee :)

It's classed as a completed call - so the standard 5p connection charge applies.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Thanks Heinz, I wondered (and hoped) if that was the case!!
  • Hi it would seem that if you telephone afriend who has the 1571 answer service and their line is currently in use (engaged) then the 1571 answer service cuts in immediatley. You then pay the connection charge irrespective of whether you leave amessage or not. I have been looking through my itemised bill, and can see instances where my wife has manged to rack up call cost of over £1 trying to get through to her friend. Without 1571 you would get a engaged tone, and hang up no charge. Seems strange to me that you can be charged for a connection that you have no control over. With a normal answer phone you at least have a few seconds in which to decide to hang up with 1571 it is immediate and before you know that the laine is in use, you are charged. Check your bills you will see what I mean.

  • Can 1571 be removed from a phone line if required, tried to do this on my business line but option on bt account web page doesn't allow this?

Just received our bill and noticed a lot of 10pence charges for trying to get through to family and friends especially over the Xmas and New Year period.
We never leave massages so we did not realise we were being charged for this.Phoned Bt and the only way i could get to speak to someone person to person was to press the option to cancel account.
They confirmed that yes we are charged for this but offered £5.00 compensation (guilt payment) which we accepted.
He said that it would happen again next time.
I have sent e-mails to all my family and friends warning them of this and have suggested getting rid of this service.
