HM bodywash/soap using Borax??

Hi, I have searched around and found threads on both soap and borax, but wanted to know something a bit more specific, thought maybe the OS-Style soapmakers out there could help me...

I've been "Googling around" trying to find out about HM soap, and found you have to use lye (i'm a bit scared by this). Also found Cold Cream recipes using distilled water, oil and borax. Does the borax do a similar job to the lye? obviously one makes a bar and one makes a cream.

If the borax is working like the lye then is it possible to make some kind of shower gel/cream using 'kitchen cupboard' ingredients?

I believe to make soap you need a fat/oil and somthing caustic (lye) to get an oil and water emulsion to get yourself clean. Perhaps a big vat of cold cream to use in the shower would work out very expensive?

Sorry this is a bit rambling, I've been going in circles for a week trying to understand this... any advice or info would be great!

Thanks! :D

Personally I have had so many good offers through boots BOGOFS combined with extra points etc, and sales, that I would not bother with making shower gel/body wash. I have made soap, using the book by Melinda Coss (amazon it) which explains everything. Yes caustic soda is dangerous, but the soap is made then left to 'cure' for a month over which time it becomes ok to use. Commercial soap is made in the same way so it's no mystery once you read the explanations you will be fine. There are a lot of American websites on soapmaking.
Don't know a thing about Borax but I'm guessing its nothing like caustic soda.
My HM soap lasted AGES! Too long in fact and i got bored with it, so I would suggest making smallish bars unless you don't get bored using the same soap for a year;)

  • i always pour half shower gel and half water into last bottle and mix it up, it last just as long and is just as good. i always use one of those puffball things too cos i think they help it to lather up and go further. i do the same with handwashes too.

    i hope this helps.

Hm... borax sounds like nasty stuff to me.

There's a recipe for shower gloop in our Save Zillions on Cleaning Index:-

  • Thanks for the advice. I should just stick to BOGOF's and stop the compulsive experimenting!
