Nightmare!

Hi there
Been on here a few weeks ago as our tenants of six months were aksing for 'goodwill'payment for inconvenience suffered as result of a few things going wrong with the house. (all of which were not that major but none the less dealt with in a very timey fashion and regardless of cost)
We decided to try to come to an arrangement with them (better the devi you know and the do look after the house get on with the neighbours etc) and wrote them a mail outlining the offer.
We heard nothing back for three weeks until today when we realise through internet banking that they have reduced their rent this month and presumably for the foreseeable future...?
Naturally they are in breach of contract as goodwill payments are just that - and they must come from our end not theirs.
I am willing for this to happen as long as i get in writing that they intend to up the rent when the amount we were offering has been reached..
Cant help feeling ive been a complete mug though and my heart wants to just issue them notice.
Any advice?

  • Issue them notice, they can't just unilaterally reduce the rent, that is not on.

Did they reduce the amount by your agreed goodwill payment?
If you have telephone or online banking you can do this yourself. Maybe they changed it once and will change it back.

I did wonder this. However we made it clear in our email that the payments were to come from OUR end. (more controllable that way) They obviously blatently disregarded that. PS they are very astute tenants so there is no way they could have taken anything the wrong way...
  • I can't believe what people will try and get away with. I'm a tenant and would never even consider reducing my rent payment without it being agreed in advance.

I hate to say it being a tenant myself but give them notice!! Or perhaps give them a chance to pay the difference. But then they'd know the threat of notice was there.....

Why can't people just look after their own and other's property and not try and get something for free. Things go wrong. Our washing machine broke and between an engineer coming to declare it nackered and a new one appearing it was nearly a week. I didn't even consider asking for anything for the inconvenience. If it had been my own washing machine it would have been worse i would have had to pay for it myself.

grrr gives good tenants a bad name!!
What's fur ye won't go by ye!
