Tax Credit Compensation

Finally managed to get some sort of result from the tax credits Office,

A while a go they didnt act on my change of circs and overpaid for 3 months, it was only about £160, but they claimed it back and stated it was my fault.

After numerous letters and refusal from them to co-operate and admit it was their fault, I finally got a letter today.

The letter admitted that there was a fault on the online system at the time and that is why the details didn't go through (no mention of why the telphoned changes didn't).

They haven't admited blame entirely, but they've made a compensation payment of £30 for the error and £30 for the delay in replying.

Not quite as much as they took back through the overpayment recovery but a result in that they've admitted it was their systems in error.

I dont know why they finally owned up but, I think it ssomething do with the last letter where I requested my complete file in order to take it further.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

I might try that. I've had nothing but problems with this last month. They have made a mistake and I can't seem to speak to someone who will put it right. I have asked for the complaints procedure and have got everything through the post but that. I am going to go into one of their offices so I can speak to someone face to face.

COP 1 is the leaflet about complaining, available on the HMRC website.

They took about 8 weeks to send the info, and about 2 furehr weeks for the letter I received today.
