cost of utility bills for student?

hi i was wondering if anyone could advise me. me and my partner are both students and are looking at getting a student house this coming year.

we are going to look at a few 1 bedroom flats, which will cost £100 per week for both of us, including water, gas and electricity.

and also at a few 2 bedroom houses (although 1 bedroom is small so would be a study) which will cost £75 per week for both of us excluding any bills.

i would prefer to live in a house than a flat, but my question is: would we be able to manage all the utility bills (water, gas and electric) in a house for no more than £25 a week, bearing in mind there is 2 of us and we would both use our computers often?

any advise would be great.

oh and we live in liverpool, if thats any help.

thanks. claire

House of 5 use around £85 gas and £40 electric a month between us. We have gone over this during winter though.

Are you sure the flat let will be inclusive of utility bills? This is not usual.

Firstly any property with gas central heating/ hot water will be cheaper to run than an all electric set up. Secondly the cost of your heating bills will depend on how well the property is insulated - double glazed windows, cavity wall (or being mid terrace!) and loft insulation. Flats are generally better insulated than houses as they have neighbours above, below and either side.

Then you must consider how frugal you intend to be. The most energy hungry processes are anything that produces heat - heating, hot water, tumble dryers and, to a lesser extent, washing machine/ dishwashers. Your computers and lighting should be a consideration but they won't massively affect your bills.

For comparison, we are two in a two bedroom flat and spend £20 a quarter on water, and £34 a month on electricity between us. We are careful with both - heating one room only, no tumble dryer, one of us showers at work about half of the time. Head over to the "gas and electricity" message board on here to see how much bills vary depending upon how careful the consumer is.

£25 per week for a one bed flat seems pretty generous, not bad even for a small house. You have to remember that you can take control of these costs. If you monitor usage you can turn the temperature down, use equipment less, stop leaving things on standby etc to save costs.

Between two of you 25 a week is plenty... just don't be silly with it as has been said.

me and my partner have a two bed back to back which is usually running 2 computers for a large part of the day and a dehumidifier 24 hours (apart from that we are very stricked with electricity)- our electric bill with npower for the quater was £85 which was high for us as its usually £40ish- we think its because of price increases and christmas elec. our gas is usually under £200 a quater- heating on for 8 hours mon-fri and all weekend during the day. hope this helps.
