Strange messages started apearing - please help

Thaks pchelpman. I've spent the weekend, since posting the log trying to clean it up using the original instructions and doing scan after scan. After doing the Hijack this I followed advice from there and posted the log on the pchelpforum and someone there is helping me. I think that I've got rid of most of it now - there's just a few things still to be removed.

I was a complete novice at this and have had a horrible weekend trying to sort it out and follow instructions and ended up in a real mix up. I really hope that's in a better state now than this log shows.

It isn't a dell computer - I do have a dell printer though - could that have been how it all got in? Children used miniclip a lot - thought it might have been through that. Think though I was just stupid and didn't take enough care in protecting it - had norton anti-virus and aol sypware and thought that was enough. Many thanks for your advice and help.

angus1 - my recommendations were based on the HJT log you posted in your "two part" post above.

Are you now saying that it has probably now changed?

Please remember it is NOT a good idea to post a log then start scanning or othertwise changing things. It makes the log useless.

Please post another log now but don't do anything else till I've seen it.

When posting please let me know how the computer is operating now.

We'll take it from there.

Thanks pchelpman, I'm sorry i've been in such a muddle trying to get it all sorted - will do nothing more till you have a look at this for me.

The computer is working much better except for the system 32 file opening on boot, a Hdreg error 53 message and a microsoft box popping up a lot asking if i want to send an error report. Don't know if they are anything to do with all this or not.

Miniclip AND Dell .... Lord help us. You may be right. The particular spyware I have in mind is the MyWaySearch bar and related stuff.

You probably want to print this out as it's a bit long.

That Hdreg error 53 is part of the process for the registration of your PC. Go to start>run, type in msconfig, go to startup, look through that list for anything that might resemble that and uncheck/untick it.

You will have to reboot for it to take effect. After that a popup should appear; just tick for not to show again.

You say that the "system32" folder keeps opening when you start up. It shouldn't (as you probably guessed).

This behavior can occur if a null, incomplete or damaged entry exists in the registry. The system32 folder will open on boot if a incorrect or corrupted entry is in either of the registry keys .....

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

or

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

or if you have a corrupted link in your start>programs>startup folder.

The first thing to do is create a restore point start>programs> accessories>system tools> System Restore.

Select "Create a resore point" and follow instructions.

Then to fix the problem. As before, go to Start>run type in msconfig press enter key.

Click on the startup tab and look for any blank entries or entries that only have one " in them in the command column.

Uncheck any that do.

Click Apply and restart. If the problem persists go to start>programs>startup and right click each item in the startup folder to check that the target file is valid.

You probably have some registry corruption causing this. I would download and run ERUNT to backup the registry then NTREGOPT to repair it

Now to the HJT log.

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

How do I know if it's a 64 bit operating system?

It's not scary ... just take your time and work through it steadily.

Don't worry about MyWay if you don't use it or see it popping up.

Your product documentation should tell you if it's running a 64-bit system though, frankly, I doubt it. You can also check with the folk who sold it to you.

Actually, if you had the 64-bit version you'd know it by the two large dents in your wallet. One for the extra expensive version of Windows and the other even larger one for the very expensive special hardware needed to run it!

One little test ... go to start > run then type "cmd" at the prompt, type edit and press enter. If the edit command runs then you have a 32-bit version. This command is disabled on the 64-bit.

I'm stuck. Have got to the bit about downloading Erunt and NTRegopt and went on the website you said but don't know what to click on - there's nothing that says download here or similar.

The system 32 didn't appear after I did as you said. Hdreg did though - can't see anything in the start up bit that refers to it all.
