WARNING: POST OFFICE damaged a parcel & don't want to compensate.

A warning to all re Royal Mail compensation for damaged items or the lack of it! I sold a gift box set of 10 books on October 20th to an Amazon marketplace customer. She emailed me a few days later to say that they had been damaged in the post, that they were for a gift to a friend, she wanted to post them back & if I didn't sort it out she would contact her credit card company! I had sold the same gift set several times before without any hitches & it is the 1st time any one asked to return something. A few days later I received the damaged book set & compensated the buyer in full. I also sent her a book of 12 1st class stamps as she'd requested to cover her return postage costs. Amazon do not allow refunds over the original purchase price. I sent off the form to RM along with the certificate of posting, buyers emails & Amazon page showing the refund. Thet wrote back asking to see the items. I said that I could take them into a PO but didn't want to post them as the set is heavy & costly to post. They wrote again asking for photographs. I sent them photographs. They wrote again but changed the reference to Ebay. I wrote to them explaining that this has nothing whatsoever to do with Ebay & asked why they'd changed the reference. They wrote again changing the reference to Amazon & enclosed a postage label for me to send the damaged item. I sent them the damaged giftbox & the damaged packaging. They have now written again asking for the books. I could send the books but they weren't damaged! The books are small & it will be almost impossible to sell outside of the gift set which is very popular. If I send RM the books they'll probabally say, that as they weren't damaged they can't compensate! I'm fed up. The set was brand new in mint condition when it left my hands. Be warned.

so they requested you send the damaged items back and you refused?
so they are not(at this point) refusing
look at it this way.you get the giftset then send them just the damaged wrapping and claim the full cost
you are asking for a refund of the full value whilst retaining the goods0 -
What sort of packaging had you put around the gift set?0

I have not refused to send anything back. I have sent them the damaged box & packaging as requested. I will be more than happy to send them the books (which I can not sell without the giftbox) if they will agree that they have damaged the item & pay out. Otherwise I would rather give the books to charity. This case has been ongoing since October! I have sold several of these gift sets before, also to overseas buyers, they have always been posted in extra strong, extra large manilla bubble wrap & always arrive in the same condition as they left. I am concerned because this case has been going on forever & I could send them the books yet they might still refuse to pay out. I am asking for a refund for the full value of the item plus the cost of refunding the buyer additional postage for returning the item to me.0

you wont get the additional postage for returning the item to you
if you want consequential loss then use a service that covers it
if you have sent several then this is a one off
seems to me you want the refund regardless
now if you send the books as requested and you dont get a refund then you can have a rant0 -
I will explain to them that the books are not damaged but they are worthless without the damaged giftbox. If they can confirm that I will definately receive a refund when they receive them then I shall be happy to put them in the post, otherwise, I'd rather give them to charity.0

well then thats your choice is it not?
you are being asked to send them the entire package that you sent
i dont get why you are not seeing the point0 -
I have re read this thread several times as I wasn't sure what was been said.
I can only liken it to buying a mobile say from T mobile online and wanting a refund without returning the phone and only sending the outer damaged box back
Surely if you want compensation for a damaged item you can't expect to keep it as well?
Your choice really, keep the books and get no refund, or send them back.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. It does seem as if you need to package this better. Did you have any packaging around the outer box? I would be very surprised if damage to a box would get you any compensation0
