Kitchen base unit size question

Hi all,
Am embarking on a new kitchen, possibly from wickes. Is there a minimum base unit size for putting a hob into a worktop? Or do the hobs not need a base unit below them - eg are there ones that sit within the thickness of the worktop?

Depending on the thickness of your worktop, some of the ceramic hobs may fit in its thickness. Otherwise a standard hob needs a 60 cm base unit. It would also be possible to cut away the top edges of units if the hob bridged two units, or if you were having a wider hob.0

If not centred in a 600 unit you need to make the overhang the same on each side to make it look semetrical and correct if possible0
