Do you just mean reruns of earlier adverts or are you looking at advertising based on nostalgia more generally?
  • my question is looking at all the comebacks, looking at whether its showing a lack of imagination in the consumer or marketer. so insted of bringing a new product to the shops they are bringing back old ones. therefore people are already familier with the product and they dont need to spend so much on marketing. i would like to know what people think about this. do they like looking back and buying products they used to or do they enjoy buying new products
    thanks

I prefer old favourites. You know what they are. I rarely try new stuff because there's so much new stuff all the time and you don't know what you're getting.

I see they've just brought back the "beanz meanz heinz" ads. Maybe people will remember them from their youth and buy the beans because they want to feel young again!
  • yes both those replies seem to be the norm, what ive found is people are uncertain about our current economic climate and so look back to a time when things seemed simpler. good old days!. no youth crime, guns such things and just a more enjoyable life. thanks for your replies, if anyone has anymore views i would love to hear them thanks

bring back opal fruits, and the a team while you're their, only joking mate.

I think it's quite clever, they play on a certain demographic to recognise the product n then viral marketing to get others to try it. It's basicall about causing a stir, kinda like we are here, now im probably gonna go buy my self some opal fruits... (I know ther starburst, please dont correct me, everybody knows the real names opal fruits)

Good Luck mate, let me know if you need surveys completed. I feel your pain i got my proposals coming up and thats bad enough
  • they are actually bringing back opal fruits at the minute! so theres abit of goodnews for you! yes im trying to create a questionnaire now, are you allowed to put them on here?

What a good idea for a dissertation! What subject are you studying?

I think bringing back old adverts or brands that haven't been seen for a good few years certainly stirs nostalgia in people, which in turn encourages them to buy the product. However, I think this approach works more with brands being ressurected (Wispa) rather than old ads being used for current products (Heinz). People went mad for Wispas because they had been unavailable for so many years, and eating them again prompted the nostalgia. The Heinz ad (although it is good and I do like it!) works by reminding viewers of the original ads and possibly prompting to think things like 'I was only a kid then, I remember that the first time round, that's a classic jingle' or whatever, but I don't think it really encourages people to buy the product if they don't already. Heinz beans have been available for years and years, so in this case, the nostalgia stops when the ad has finished - buying a can of Heinz beans wouldn't really bring back happy memories of times gone by.

Not sure if you can put surverys up here, but I'd be happy to complete one and help you out. I know how hard it is to get participants for dissertation research!

Are you saying that Wispa is coming back? As in the actual Wispa bar? Does that mean Wispa Golds will also be coming back? :j

Apart from Wispa Gold, I'm not really too fussed about bringing back old items. Times change and things fall out of fashion (both consumer products and ideologies) and I think that's a good thing. I much prefer to try new things.

What subject are you studying? And at which university?
