?? HELP PLEASE? Can I get a BLUE BADGE for my son with ADHD on low rate mobility??

hi i just want to know if it's possible to get a blue badge parking badge for my son who has ADHD? He gets DLA middle rate care & lower rate mobility. He has no awareness of danger and I have to constantly hold his hand so he doesn't run out behind cars etc. It is a knightmare if I go shopping to try and find our car whilst holding onto him (aged 8), my other son (aged 5 also has ADHD but waiting to hear about DLA) and my 8 week old baby & pushchair plus the shopping. I try not to go anywhere with them but it's hard. It would be a godsend if we could park in the safe places right at the front of the shops/ supermarkets etc. but would this be possible? Has anyone got one like this?
Thanks ever so much for replies and advice xx
ps they only have a few parent & child spaces in most places and are always taken, it's a good day if you can get one of those! Yet they have at least 3 times more disabled spaces that allways seem to be empty. I'm going by my 24hr tesco.

Sorry, don't know the answer to your question, but round here the 'parent and child' spaces are just as close to the supermarket doors as the 'disabled' ones - would it make that much difference to you ?

You don't even need to be on DLA at all to get a Blue Badge, you can apply for it quite separately.
  • Ask your doctor to support your request for a blue badge the closer you are to the store the less chance there is for any danger coming to you child .awareness of danger could be one of the reasons

  • Hello,

When you get the forms from your council, check the qualifying criteria.

In the area where I live, Middle Rate Care is automatic qualifying for a blue badge, so you would not need to proceed to the Doctors section of the form.
Like already suggested, if MRC is not automatic, proceed to the section to send to your GP.

    Good luck,

  • Hi - Here the DLA criteria is higher rate mobility.
Apart from that, it would depend on your childs GP or consultant.
Have you contacted any ADHD orgainsations for suggestions? - My brother used a 'wrist-link' for his son who has aspergers when out shopping as he would just run off.

    Cheers

Many LAs give the impression that you HAVE to be on a certain level of DLA but this isn't really the case. They do this so that they don't have to do independent assessments for Blue Badges but it doesn't mean that you can't get a badge if not on DLA. This was exactly the case for where I lived, although all the information led you to believe otherwise.
  • If you have a 24hr tesco then I take it that its a sizeable store. It may be worth writing to tesco & requesting more parent & child places.
My grandad had cancer & was hardly able to move, yet because he didn't have quite literally a physical disability, he was turned down for a blue badge. Trying to get an elderly man in & out of a car to a wheelchair & back in a standard space was a nightmare.
  • i have not applied for my son as I have blue badge but was told that he would get one if needed he is 6yrs and has adhd and autism.
my friend has 2 boys both on spectrum which they class the same as adhd for the reasons danger level etc.... and she has one for each of them. it was on the news a couple of months ago about automatically giving hidden disabilities like adhd/austism blue badges so just enquire at your local social services they will let you know if you need dr's signature

Officially you are supposed to have a physical disability that severely restricts your walking ability to get a Blue Badge-this doesn't have to have anything to do with DLA but it's misleading to suggest 'anything goes'. There's no harm in OP applying I suppose but I doubt they'd be successful

  • it also asks about safety and dangers hence why some get them.
