New Boiler v 2nd Hand Boiler

Hi Folks,

Looking for your opinion on my personal dilemma. I currently have a 21 year old 'normal' boiler which still works but is on it's last legs.
I was given a 4 year old combi boiler(Glowworm 30kw) from a workmates dad who was upgrading to a 37kw boiler.
I got a local heating engineer in to give me a price to replace my existing boiler with the afore mentioned boiler. He quoted me £1150 to use the boiler that i had. This would be all pipework, flush out the system and move to my utility room(existing boiler is in Kitchen in a fitted cupboard).
He also gave me a price of £2150 to fit a new boiler. This would be a Bosch Worcester Junior 28 which comes with a 5 year warranty.
Now this would be an 'A' rated boiler which the 2nd hand one isn't.
What i'am thinking is that i pay BG £17 pm for the Homecare 200 which is £204 py. Over 5 years = £1020. Now this is the difference in price from installing a new boiler to the 2nd hand one.
Do you think it is worth it to install a new boiler and cancel the Homecare 200 or use the 2nd hand one and keep it going?

Opinions appreciated.

Stevie

TBH , I would have the new boiler fitted. I fitted a second hand boiler in my house & now i wish I had fitted new.
You can always sell the other unit:D
  • If it helps we've got the Junior 28i installed. It's runs fine & isn't very noisy.

I'd also go with the new boiler, it may save you money in the long run as you never know when you'll have to have the 2nd hand one replaced.

The price he's quoted also seems right for that boiler (without looking through loads of files to check) I think that's what we paid for ours.

    Hi

I would always go for a new boiler if money allows. I understand the temptation to try and save money by using second hand equipment but you may lose out in the long term.

Boiler design and technology are always being improved. Many companies are now offering A rated boilers at good prices as the credit crunch bites.

New boilers will cost more at the start but they may save you money on your heating as they are more efficient than older models. They are also more eco friendly.

Longer warranties may be available for new boilers which will help long term too.

I would look around and see what is on the market and what deals you can do. Check out the various websites as they hold a lot of useful information.

All the utility companies offer Central Heating Care schemes so see who can offer you the best deal.

Your current supplier may also be able to do you a better deal. Give them a call and discuss what options they have available.

Whatever you decide I would personally always keep a Central Heating scheme in place for peace of mind.
