Hmmm you know it's funny you mention protien, i guess i should know better im a body builder/dancer and i personally eat a "HUGE" amount of protien, never really thought about it effecting the kids though.
My diet is super super strict so i always wanted the kids to eat "normally" rather than diet freaks like thier mum.. haha... but i guess it can't hurt to up the protien it should be pretty easy too as i already know what all the good sources are
*grins* From what I've been told (I eventually sought advice because being hungry all the time is no fun for anyone) it's one of those things that can vary vastly from person to person. I don't have the excuse of any formal exercise to burn the energy with, but I'm a fidget, and I guess that burns more energy than you might think.
I did actually try the "Well, if I'm going to snack I will snack on fruit!" thing, and couldn't think why it didn't work - of COURSE it didn't when I was basically snacking on just more sugars, albeit natural ones (although tangerines are still my favourite treat ever!)0 -
Yeah fruit effects me funny too... but thats not suprising it is just sugar...
You know im sitting here kicking myself i wouldn't dream of eating "fruit" or any other sugers alone.. yet i feed them to the kids all the time, im gonna try uping the protien see if that helps.0 -
Thick homemade veg soup seems to help fill us up, especially in this cold weather. I make a big pan of it every week with whatever is in the veg box. The kids will eat anything even if they don't like the veg served on its own. Faves of the moment are butternut squash or celeriac, but in both there are some other veg too.
Served with wholemeal bread, mine often have 2nds and it keeps them going for quite a while.0 -

This is just something that occured to me when you said he drinks a lot more than your other son - if he's eating loads and not putting on any weight plus thirsty all the time it may be a sign of diabetes. (Reading further on I noticed you said it wasn't that excessive so it's probably not but I'd already typed it)
Is this a recent thing? If so he must just be heading for a major growth spurt, my mother said my brother only ever grew about twice a year, but he'd eat non-stop for a fortnight then shoot up a few inches (and 2 shoe sizes) overnight if you listen to her0 -
Hi There
I havent read all the thread so this may have been suggested already, but have yu checked that he hasnt got worms or possibly a tape worm? There might be a medical explanation for this but some youngsters are generally hungry all the time.
If its not medical, then I would bulk up meals with more carbs (rice, pasta, spuds etc) and maybe bread and butter with meals

my sister was nad still is like this, i was fussy and easily pleased with toast. but she would feast on rubbish all day long and yet she is still like a whippet. she had school dinners everyday then would go to tuck shop and stock up to keep her going during classes hen after school she went to newsagents and bought a load of millions for the bus journey home, once home, around four oclock she would have about two pot noodles or scrambled egg on toast or french toast plus loads of coke and sweets aswell. then dinner about six which she always finshed and no sooner had she finished that but she was snacking again and it would go on til around nine or ten each night til she went to bed.. i agree with the larger breakfast and also try porridge and fruit. there is a saying that we should eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper. i find this hard to do myself but my son who is 3.5 eats a banana/apple/pear/grapes, porridge, toast/pancake, yoghurt drink, yoghurt and juice/milk/decaf tea for breakfast. he is a fussy eater however and i find that breakfast is the meal he prefers most so i try and get as much variation of his diet into that meal. snacks are usually at 10 and 3, this is usually fruit and toast/pancake with milk/juice and lunch tends to be small. as is dinner but its always a reduced portion of what we eat."it's better than a poke in the eye with a pointy stick" - my dad, regularly throughout my childhood when I complained about something being too small/not perfect/not tasty/not what I wanted. he was right every time.0

Fancy sharing your flapjack recipie Leiela?
1/3 cup oats
1 banana
1 egg white
1/4 cup unsweetened apple sauce
1/4 tsp cinnamon
Sweetner to taste (optional if you have alot of sweet fruit you dont always need it )
Nuts / Fruit whatever really.
Mix it up, throw it on a baking sheet and bung it in the ovenat about 180 for 10mins.
They don't have the same consistancy as your typical flapjacks they are softer abit like cookies i guess but the kids don't seem to mind.0 -

Have you tapped his legs lately to check that they are not hollow?
My son is the same. He could eat anything. I let him eat fruit if he says he's hungry as it takes time to eat it (as opposed to a sandwich which he'd inhale). I also often do scrambled eggs on toast for breakfast or beans as they can be quite filling. Also, trying say Ready Brek for breakfast is an idea as it is filling (you can stir cocoa powder or golden syrup in it to make it different).
Also - just an observation, but rice can make you hungry you know. I don't know why it does this but you can get real hunger pains after eating it. I'm not the only person to have this problem with it. Perhaps try pasta or mashed potato as an alternative?
I think if my son knew that there were HM flapjacks and/or muffins up for grabs in the kitchen then he'd constantly badger me too. Therefore I only make them in batches big enough for one puddings worth for the five of us. Perhaps cut down on what you make and offer him only fruit or vegetable sticks when he says he's hungry. Try it for a week and see if he's still complaining as much?"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
It's not just boys, my dd is 6 and is constantly hungry, for example we went to a wedding recently and were not eating until mid afternoon so gave her a large bowl of porridge and took snacks in my bag, flapjack and fruit, at the wedding she had an adult meal of chicken wrapped in bacon stuffed with cream cheese and all the trimmings including my veg 'cos i dont like it:o then apple pie and ice cream and my ice cream, (forgot she also had soup and roll starter) when the buffet started she was 1st in, then wedding cake and cheese and biscs at 10pm, we got home at 0030hrs and she created because she was not allowed supper, she is very tall and thin but i just can't fill her up:eek:0
