I always put mine through without doing anything (including the wash) other than checking the tyres and that all the lights are working. I used to always get it looked over and failed twice on something that the mechanic had done. Passed this week.0

I just check that lights are working, tyres and wiperblades are fine and that I have water in the washer bottle and put her in. Never washed a car either (and I do live in a field).
Its always best to put her in and let them tell you what if any work needs doing if you fail rather then getting a garage to look at it before hand - they will always find something needs doing0 -
There's a car wash at Stormont, end of Sunmmerhill Avenue, that do MOT washes, but I'm sure there's somewhere closer to Forestside.Norn Iron Club Member No. 252 :beer:0

With the price of garage work, and the age/condition you report of your car, just put through the MOT. If it fails, they tell you what's wrong and it costs <£40 to rebook if you go into the office straight afterwards. THEN go to a garage and ask them to fix the fault.
Depending on your ability, of course, check these before your MOT:
Horn, all seatbelts, all exterior lights (and make sure you know where the controls are), set the headlight alignment to zero, fill the washer fluid, tidy up the inside of the car, and check for wear/damage on the tyres. Also see if you can see how worn the brake pads are as well as the disks.
Finally, look at all the other cars on the road - assume most of them are roadworthy. I had a 2002 car that I just sent through each year, and I now have a 1995 car that I did the same with. No fails yet.
