Having been looking at booking a USA holiday for summer for a week or two, we're torn between LA and Florida. My girlfriend's been to Florida before but I've been to neither.
Just wondering if anyone has any advice on LA? We won't be driving out there so any info on transport, value for money hotels etc as well as areas to avoid would be great.
Thanks,
James

If you're not driving then don't go to Los Angeles - you have to have a car.0 -
Really? I've heard the Metro system is pretty good out there?
Not that we wouldn't...just we're 20 and can't hire a car untill 21.0 -
We were only there for 2 nights and only went from Beverly Hills to Universal but used public transport. The metro system was great but we were quite scared on the bus when someone refused to pay for a ticket and there was an altercation with the bus driver (We really thought he was going to pull a gun out or something:eek: ). On the way back the bus just terminated for no reason and we had to wait for another - but other than that it was fine!!!0

Another vote for you need a car in LA, we didnt the first time we went, imagine Milton Keynes and then make it even bigger
Unless you are staying where you want to be, I would definitely hire a car, the first hotel we checked in at the receptionist even gave us the car parking permit despite telling her we didnt have a car, one taxi driver summed it up nicely "being in LA without a car is like being anywhere else without legs"
San Franscisco would be a far better bet without car if you want to goto the west coast0 -
I've used the Metro in LA and it was fine as far as it went but it's not extensive and you will find that it doesn't go to some of the places you might like to see. You won't get the most out of LA without a car simply because the greater LA area is enormous. The little map in the holiday brochure makes it look small but places are a long way apart. Hollywood to Long Beach is 30 miles and took an hour and a half by Metro, it's a similar distance to Disneyland in Anaheim.
I agree with canardo that San Francisco is a much easier place to get around without a car. I've been multiple times and find it easy to get around on foot and public transport, as US cities go it's one of the safest. As it's quite touristy you should be able to book trips if you want to go further afield to places like Monterey or the Napa Valley.0 -
Haven't been to LA but I didn't think Americans are big on roundabouts  .Another vote for you need a car in LA, we didnt the first time we went, imagine Milton Keynes and then make it even biggerSan Franscisco would be a far better bet without car if you want to goto the west coast
San Fransciso is a great year-round destination and you don't need a car but it helps you appreciate the crooked street that much more if you do.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

Everyone will tell you that........
Everyone except from the people who have actually been there that havent spent a few days in Hollywood only.
LA is one of the biggest tourist destinations in the World.
Many many people from around the world who are top of there game choose to live there - you have to wonder why??
I am well travelled and it is my favourite place in the word -obviously everyone to there own however i urge you to find someone who has been there for at least a week and have gotten out of Hollywood who would not recommend LA.
You have the beaches of Hawaii at Laguna
You have the Theme Parks of Florida(better actually i feel...)
You have the Iconic feel on New York
You are in the centre of a diverse state great for travelling. San Diego South. San Fran North. Vegas East and so much more.
Shopping, sights, vibe, weather, activities. LA has it all, everything -it falls short on nothing except its transport system however as a tourist you may enjoy it. There is a Randy Newman song 'I love LA' which is dedicated to how fun it is cruising around LA
Just my opinion.0
