EDF Electricity Bill

Morning All!

We have just moved out of a 1 bedroom flat in Brighton. The day we left I contacted EDF to give them our final meter reading. The gas bill is all ok but the electricity bill is through the roof.

We pay quarterly as I don't like DD (foolish I know), usually it'd come to about £80-90 at most. Prior to giving them the reading we had a our usual quarterly bill through which was nigh on £300. This bill is dated 19th Jan.

I gave them my meter reading on 28th January and according to their readings in these 9 days we used 385 units of electricity. Over 40 units a day!!! This now means I have a bill for £344!!

Should I just dispute it and tell them to get it sorted or do I have no real option but to pay it?

Ta very much peeps!

    Hi

Were your previous bills estimates or has the meter been read regularly?

  • All of them were estimated, but this still doesn't explain the £300 bill we got just before we moved out.

Doesn't it? You've probably been underpaying for some time and ended up with a catch-up bill.

I agree with Magentasue it sounds like your bills have been underestimated as they have done that with me. You will now have the catchup bills for all those underestimated bills.

We're with EDF as well and we had that problem too a couple of years ago when we weren't checking the electric meter with each billing. When we went to move, we got whacked with a big bill. So its likely the bill you've had is correct.

Lesson here of course is always check your meters against the bills sent.

If previous bills were estimated your final bill is probably a catch up bill. This is because EDF have under estimated the amount of electricity used previously.

Check the final bill is based on the meter reading you gave them. If this is the case it is probably correct.

You could ask them to set up a payment arrangement to spread the final amount over as long a period as you can agree.
