Kitchen worktop bubbling - fixable?

Hi all,

It looks like some water has penetrated one of the seals on our kitchen worktop, because the chipboard seems to have 'inflated' under the surface.

Is there any way of flattening it back down again? Dry heat or heavy weights? Or do I have to resort to cutting it out and gluing in some edging strip?

Cheers, Ady

  • Hi Ady

This is a fairly typical result of water ingress on laminated worktop. Unfortunately there is no repair possible. Is the joint mitred or does it have a joining strip?

Your options are, leave it as is but it may get worse. Or you may be able to open the joint and fit some joining strip not as pretty as a mitred joint. The cut/raw ends should be sealed with either waterproof PVA, silicone sealant or yacht varnish. This will stop any further swelling. Your last option is to replace the damaged worktop.
