Are Card Readers Interchangeable?

I have a Nat West account and a Barclays account and a card reader for each/both.
I've just used my Nat West card reader with my Barclays Debit card to get the 8 digit number to access my Barclays account - it worked just fine.
So, are these card readers generally interchangeable?
It would be really useful if that is the case as I could leave one at work and one at home.
I don't understand how they actually work - so if anyone knows that would be good to know too.
TIA

As already said, they are indeed interchangeable - mostly, anyway. They're all based around an APACS standard, so they should in theory work any which way.
The Barclays reader, however, might not work with everything - it was an internally developed model, being first to market. The ones used by RBS Group, Nationwide, etc. are all made by a company called Xiring. What would William Shatner do?0
