Raised bed Twilight Zone... spooky

This weekend I decided to make a couple of raised beds in my garden to grow veg in.

I got 2 lengths of wood 14 feet long and cut them so that I had 4 peices 4 foot long, and 4 pieces 3 feet long.

So this gave me a choice.
I could either make two identical beds 4 by 3 feet.
Or
I could make one bed 4 by 4, then another 3 by 3.

Now the weiiiirrrd part.

if you divide the areas into 1 foot squares (for square foot gardening)
I get stange results.

The 3x4 beds are 12 square feet and theres 2 of them, so thats 24 square feet in total.

BUT.... the 4x4 is 16 square feet and the 3x3 is 9 square feet.

So that gives me 25 square feet...

An EXTRA foot of space from NOWHERE!!!!!!!!

My question is this.

Does this extra square actually exist, and if not what can I grow in it.;)

If you'd just cut each piece in half you could have had a 7 by 7 bed = 49 sq feet.

Yeah but didnt want to go bigger than 4x4 so I can reach the middle without standing on the soil.

But your right, I would have got a lot more area for my money.

OMG, I have just discovered that if I had bent the planks round and made a 28 foot circle, the soil area would have been 62.388737692022985 square feet.

I feel a bit robbed now with just 25 feet of planting area.
