  • Hi all, wondering if you can help, we live in a detached house and the only heating we have is LPG so last winter it was really expensive for us to heat, we want to be more organised this year and keep the heating bills down. What would you suggest is the best/cheapest way of heating my home? I am happy to buy heaters etc but have no idea what to buy
    Thanks xx

Good idea, Mardatha. I have been drawing up a winter plan. I am on the look out now for better curtains for the living room that are lined. I am dusting off my sewing machine to make draught excluders. I am also training the boys to be more vigilnat turning things off, especially lights.

A darn site more than we can afford, I suspect. We cut down as much as possible last winter. Can't really go any lower as it was getting uncomfortable. Will rely on open fire as much as we can with wombled wood. And then we will have to pay more. No alternative.

we've started to look for old pallets and things for the wood burners and have bought some coal at summer prices. I now do the washing on cold only. i use a blanket and hot water bottle wear a hat and gloves indoors. the house will not be hot or even warm this winter. it will be cool! i've picked up some synthetic sheepskin boots for £5 to use as indoor slippers, will keep the ankles warm. I need to save for wooly pullies and thermal underwear.

we intalled multifuel stoves and ecofans. loft insulation and draught excluders. i have fleeces at the windows. use a blanket/duvet and hot water bottle, furry boots, hat and gloves indoors. soup/hot water in a thermos. cant think of anything else. I am going to pretend that I live in an old draughty castle with no heating, and dress accordingly.

I live in a terraced house & next door has been empty for 3 years.
Someone has just bought it so i'm hoping we may get a bit of warmth through the wall or at the very least it will take away the cold, damp feel that came through last year.

On my travels, back and forth, I pass several skips.

Alot of these have doors, pallets, old skirting and floorboards in, so I'll give the relevant house a knock and ask if I can have whatever it is... most people say "yes".

This gets chopped into kindling and abit larger for someone we know who has a woodburner and an open fire.
She chips in with the petrol money when we got a car full and we take it over, sometimes if I'm going that way I say "no" to the money and she'll give me a cake or whatever, I supose it's a barter system really.

But I can't go past a skip now without giving it a bit of a "look" for allsorts.
