I know a lot of people think carpets in bathrooms are unhygienic but they're certainly more warm and comforting to bare feet when you have to trot to the loo in the middle of the night when the heating is switched off. Laminate might be the latest fashion but every laminated room I've ever visited in winter seems to be colder than a carpeted one and leaves me with freezing feet.

Strangely, as much as I hate the stuff, we negotiated as part of our tenancy a total bathroom refit, in which to wee-sodden carpet got ripped out and it got decked out with new "floor to ceiling" wall tiling, a power shower, and on the floor, the "click together" tile effect laminate stuff, with all the gaps around the pipes etc siliconed.

Now, THIS stuff, I can recommend. It's grippy, it's warm to the touch, it's waterproof and it's moppable..in fact the bathroom is so warm the cats seem to have taken up residence..

We put this down in out bathroom about 6 years ago - no regrets, it is warm underfoot and sooo easy to keep clean and still looks like new.

more info on the 'click together' tile effect laminate stuff please......

I have to change the floor covering in the bathroom, en-suite, cloakroom, hallway and dining room in the next few months -- first 3 due to 'smells', 4th due to a hole scratched in it by a dog, and last due to stains. As I'm seriously looking at applying to become a child-minder later this year (and have an elderly dog who's starting to have 'little mishaps' in some of those areas) I'm desperate for something that's "easy clean" as well as comfy/warm underfoot.

I've been looking at a 'green' lino (Marmoleum) which I know won't be cheap - but I've never been anywhere that's used it -- and it's hard to tell from a small sample what it would be like underfoot in the middle of the night :o

Sooooo I suppose it's getting time to start doing again what we did in oct/nov....wrap up and turn down the heating, this is where we might have got careless and soft !! But on cool spring days we could turn the heating down and on cold winter days (which might be both in the same day with our weather ! ) we can turn it up again. Don't lose the habit of layering should be our slogan LOL ! :)
  • My heating is off until the autumn now.

But when it was on we saved electricity by trying to have baths instead of showers. We can't have the heating on without heating up the water tank, they are linked in some way. So we were heating a whole tank of water and never using it because our shower is electric. So I tried to have a bath once or twice a week and got my boyfriend to do the same. Four electric showers saved per week :)
  • We are laminating our whole house. I can't stand carpet, especially as this is someone else's leftovers. It took me six weeks of vacuuming the bedroom with a car upholstery tool to get the previous owner's hair off it.

Anyway, it's possible to put insulation on a roll underneath the laminate. Although it raises the level a little bit, it's worth it and the floor is warm.

Tile effect laminate flooring - sorry didn't see the questions first time round.

We got ours at B&Q - its easy to find and while its about £35 - £40 a pack as bathrooms tend to be a small area it's not too bad.

As I said before ours has been down years and it is lovely, if I had the energy to remover the ceramic floor tiles from the back of the house I'd do the kitchen, utility and family room in it as well.
