Is this a bargain for Guitar Starter Kit?

I want to start to learn to play the guitar . I have seen this starter kit from ebuyer.

I was wondering if this was a good deal.I dont want to spend more than £100 for guitar and amp. Can anyone find a better deal or is this ok?

Thanks in advance!

    Hi,

Unfortunately, I have learned, at my cost, that with musical instruments 'you get what you pay for' and that if you buy cheap instruments they take a lot of the pleasure out of learning in the first place. My son has been through this loop and the first guitar/amp combination was so painful to use and so difficult to get a 'good' sound out of that he nearly gave up.

    Comparing his second buy with his friends I'd have a look at these 2 sites;

    https://www.guitars.co.uk
    https://www.shopoftheworld.com

They both did starter packs that sounded so much better than the squier starter pack he settled on.

    Hope this helps.

    Try here.

Good idea is to try a local guitar shop, you may get a good deal this time of year and at least you get to try before you buy. Also they will have second hand guitars which are great for beginners.

Don't know where you are, but if you are in the West country, I would check out Project Music in Exeter. They are really helpful, and we got our son's first and second guitars from them - they will always try to match any deals, and they give first rate advice. They also have a loyalty card scheme, so any accessories are 10% off. I think for this sort of thing, you are better off going with someone who knows what they are selling!

The guitar I bought as a starter was the Squier Stratocaster IIRC, but not the one with Affinity in the title, I think there was another words replacing it

I think it cost about £170 (2-3 years ago I think) and I always thought it was pretty good (as I have now given up for the moment hehe)

That didn't include an amp, so was probably more the high end of beginners at that price

I do agree with the thought in many cases though, you get what you pay for in musical instruments

  • Cheap guitars are....err....cheap. Most guitar players will tell you can't get anything decent under £200 but you can. But you can. I wouldn't go as cheap as £60 and that includes a small amp - I can't believe that will be much good.

I've seen packs with Yamaha ERG121 like these catalogue returns:

    http://www.sohosoundhouse.com/soho/stockdetail.jsp?sku=YAMA-ERG121BL&context=SOHO_SOUNDHOUSE_WEB

These aren't bad. Though you would have to get a seperate amp.

Peavey's packs aren't to bad as they do OK small amps. I've got a bass pack which was good. Here's an example.

My last guitar purchase was an Encore - £29 at Argos reduced from £79 and far better than expected - I do have a decent amp and effects though. But I've seen Encore packs which might be worth getting.

Other cheap backs which might be worth checking are this one from Behringer - it has a 20 watt amp.

If you want a really good cheap guitar get a Yamaha Pacifica. Here's one with an amp:

    and again

Cheap guitars are not necessarily bad - for the mid-range stuff you're paying for assembly in China instead of the USA. I've found that Squirer, Epiphone, Yamaha, and Vintage are pretty good.

Cheap amps are another matter - normally sound tinny, however you can get round this by buying a cheap effects unit - Zoom are pretty good for the price. Personally, I play mostly through a Pandora unit - headphone amp, tons of effects, and bass and drums too - costs over £100 though (or a Laney 65 watt when the neighbours are away...).
