income protection insurance or what?

I have recently cancelled a loan insurance which was costing £49.00 per month. I am looking to get new insurance for that secured loan £268.00 per month, also looking for cover for my mortgage ( I have none at the moment!). I have been online looking for the best deal but I am now getting bamboozled with the huge variety of cover I could go for.
Should I take income protection insurance out? or loan insurance to cover both mortgage and secured loan?? Should I take critical illness cover??? The only thing I know for definite is that my partner and I are in the fortunate position that we will never need unemployment cover. Can anyone advise please??
