lining a chimney

how often do you need to line a chimney?, were about to have a multi fuel burning stove installed, (in an old opening) and i've asked the builder to line the chimney whilst he's doing the work, however a friend of mine has said that a chimney needs to be lined every 10 years.
we know that the chimney needs to be lined partculary since it hasn't been in use for over 10 yrs but i had read somewhere that it needs to be done every 70yrs but cant find it.
we live in a very old cottage and have no idea if it has been done (at all)

In theory the liner should be changed every time a new appliance is fitted as it should be able to last for the life of the appliance, and 10-15 years is the specified average life of a liner to my knowledge.0
