What are .tmp files?

I've just noticed that some of the excel spreadsheets I have recently been using now seem to also have a duplicate .tmp file created.
Can anyone help explain whats going on?

windows sets them up while it does things as does internet explorer

They should go when you stop editing the document. Its the way office works i think its to help stop courruption if your computer suddenly looses power, not 100% sure though. Same will happen for word documents too.0
