Over the last few years we have seen the kids leave home one at a time, reducing the occupants down from 5 to 2.
However over this same period we have seen very little change in our annual Gas useage, this year due to the cold snap could be more than the last 2 years.
Our electric bill has fallen dramatically but gas seems to stay fairly constant, so I don't think the number of people living at home is a good indication on level of gas useage..
I suppose we could switch off every radiator in the house except maybe a couple downstairs, the landing, bathroom and bedroom but then the other rooms tend to get that damp feel about them this time of year, so instead we set the TRVs in these rooms to 1 to take the chill off those rooms.
We also find that when we leave a room with no heat, the moment you open the door all the heat gets sucked from the rest of the house.
Anyone else notice this or have you managed to stay in the same property and dramatically reduce your useage once the kids had moved out?
I personally think that all the electrical gadgets and lights that were on when the kids were home heated the property, hence keeping the thermostat off and gas useage down.

My electric goes down when daughter number 2 is at uni and goes up when she comes home. She is the biggest user of electric in our house!
I too turn the rads down when children are away but can`t say its made that much difference to my gas use overall. It is hard to judge as it depends on how cold the winter is.0 -
Agreed. My electric halved when my children left home but my gas has stayed the same although I noticed a great reduction when I got a combi boiler and an extra large radiator for my attic!Self Employed, Running my Dream Jobs0
