Abbey national is offering me the new Zero

credit card. I have just cancelled another i had with them which was run by MBNA (I believe) a couple of weeks ago and as i went into the branch they said i had been already selected for this card. does this definitely mean if my credit rating is alright that i can therefore get a new card with theml. They say that this new card is run by Santander. just checking so appreciate feedback on thoughts etc. thanks!

There are no guarantees. Bank staff have sales targets to meet, so obviously it's in their interest to persuade customers to apply.

Judging from the feedback here though, it's not uncommon for customers who were "selected" to be told the computer says no.

I would check your credit file (I read your other thread) and do your homework first, if I were you ;)

Do not believe them unless they tell you that you are GUARANTEED to get it. Ask them if you have been preapproved for the card on their system.

Watch out for the responses 'you have bee shortlisted', 'you have been approved to apply', 'you are eligible to apply for...' as none of these mean you are guaranteed. I would ask them outright before you put yourself through a credit search.

  • Don't chuffing bother. I got a Zero card and it caused me nothing but trouble. I bank with Abby (not for much longer) and when I took out the card I received my first statement and paid it. A week later I found the money had been returned to my account. This went on for nearly 3 months, and I made at least 9 separate attempts to make a payment. I then instigated their internal complaints procedure and they suddenly found a way to correct their accounting problem just before I was entitled to take it to the financial ombudsman. Set of useless idiots.

Er sorry, that was absolutely nothing to do with whether you've been preselected or not. I was, but with a lousy credit limit (lousy to me anyway). Oh and when I applied it took them nearly 3 months to send me card as they lost my application. Muppets.

Just to balance things...I applied in branch (highly recommended) late Saturday morning.

BT completed (funds with other card provider) on Wednesday.

Card, PIN, and online access by the following Saturday.

DD set up and first payment collected without a problem.

    Very impressed!
  • Deals, Abbey has a pre approvals system. Many ex MBNA customers are guaranteed accepted for an Abbey credit card. There is no credit check done, the PBA does the sales process as normal but at the 'assessment' stage it comes back approved. If you ask Am i guaranteed accepted ie there is a '1' under the guaranteed approved part of the customer portal you will defo get the card.
  • Is abby owned by MBNA?
How can you be guaranteed getting an Abbey credit card if you had an MBNA?

I applied for an Abby Zero card online on friday. The application went through to the end and gave me a ref number to note for future reference. Then the page jumped back to he front page. I called Abby and asked if I had been accepted or rejected?
They said my details not on system yet and to call back Saturday. Called them today, still nothing on system and now they are tell me to apply again.

Hi i believe your applicaton has already been logged on in their systems and probably not updated until monday if you got a ref number after application. The department responsible for dealing with your application might be closed at weekends, so if i were you i would hold tight and wait until Tuesday and follow it up. You applied on friday, so it is likely your application will not be dealt with until monday.
Don't bother to reapply as this can lower your credit score with whatever credit agency they are using to credit search you.
  • Abbey is not owned by MBNA. I said many ex Abbey MBNA credit card holders have been guaranteed the new Abbey one. This means that some are and some are not. As i said, on the customer portal there is a preapproved section. Some are conditionally approved, some are guaranteed. This also applies to bank accounts, personal loans and further advances if they have a mortgage.
